Trump’s Approval Rating Sets New Record

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has sunk to its lowest point in the latest Economist/YouGov poll, released just days after his controversial decision to launch airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.

The survey, conducted during and after the announcement of the strikes and released on June 24, shows Trump with a net approval rating of -14—his worst since taking office for a second term. Just 40% of respondents approved of his performance, while 54% disapproved, marking a deeper dip than at any point in his presidency.

The data reveals widespread dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of key issues:

  • National security: -2 net approval
  • Immigration: -4
  • Jobs and the economy: -12
  • Foreign policy: -14
  • Foreign trade: -16
  • Israel-Iran conflict: -17
  • Inflation/prices: -26

Approval Slips in Key 2024 Victory States

The Economist also reported that Trump now holds a negative approval rating in 15 of the 31 states he carried in the 2024 election. These include several key battleground states critical to his reelection path:

  • Michigan: -11%
  • Nevada: -12%
  • North Carolina: -8%
  • Wisconsin: -13%
  • Arizona: -12%
  • Pennsylvania: -12%
  • Georgia: -6%

Even some traditionally red states are showing signs of erosion:

  • Texas: -8%
  • Ohio: -6%
  • Utah: -5%
  • Iowa: -4%
  • Kansas: -4%
  • Florida: -3%
  • Indiana: -3%
  • Missouri: -2%

In heavily Democratic areas, his unpopularity is even more pronounced:

  • Washington, D.C.: -73%
  • California: -31%
  • New York: -24%
  • Maryland: -36%
  • Massachusetts: -36%
  • Washington State: -28%

However, Trump continues to maintain strong approval ratings in deep red states like:

  • Alabama: +12%
  • Alaska: +10%
  • Arkansas: +25%
  • Kentucky: +9%
  • South Carolina: +16%

Momentum Reversal Confirmed by Morning Consult

Adding to the concern for Trump’s reelection team, a Morning Consult poll also released last week shows a reversal of his short-lived approval rebound. Only 46% of voters said they approved of Trump’s job performance, while 52% disapproved—a pattern similar to April and early May, when Trump’s escalating trade war fueled economic anxiety.

“Following a few weeks of improved numbers, Trump’s approval ratings are once again trending downward,” analysts at Morning Consult wrote.

The poll results come in the wake of nationwide “No Kings” protests opposing Trump’s hardline immigration policies and growing public frustration over his handling of the Israel-Iran conflict.

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from June 13 to June 15 among 2,207 registered voters, with a margin of error of ±2%.
