WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has authorized a massive military campaign against Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, disregarding months of warnings from senior military and intelligence advisors who cautioned that a direct confrontation could trigger a catastrophic regional war.

The operation, which began on February 28, 2026, involves a coordinated wave of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile sites, and leadership hubs. The fallout has been immediate and severe: Iranian state media confirmed on March 1 the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a strike on Tehran, plunging the Islamic Republic into a leadership crisis while the regime retaliates with missile strikes against U.S. bases and Gulf allies.

Diplomacy Collapses into Conflict

The shift toward military action follows the total breakdown of nuclear negotiations in Geneva earlier this February. Despite a “maximum pressure” campaign and a 15-day ultimatum issued by the White House, Tehran refused U.S. demands to halt all uranium enrichment and dismantle its missile program.

While advisors at the Pentagon and the National Security Council reportedly advocated for continued containment to avoid a “forever war,” Trump moved to execute what he describes as a “pre-emptive” strike to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Chaos in the Gulf and Truth Social Rhetoric

As the regional security situation deteriorates, President Trump has taken to Truth Social to manage the narrative, often using ALL CAPS to project strength and deflect concerns about the operation’s duration.

“THE UNITED STATES MILITARY HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER. OUR WEAPONS ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD. IRAN MADE A BIG MISTAKE—WE WILL HIT THEM HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE!” one post read on Monday.

Despite the President’s public confidence, the human and economic costs are mounting:

  • Regional Retaliation: Iran has launched ballistic missiles at U.S. Fifth Fleet facilities in Bahrain and civilian infrastructure in the UAE and Oman.
  • Global Energy Crisis: Tehran’s attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint for 20% of the world’s oil—has sent global energy markets into a tailspin.
  • Internal Unrest: A nationwide internet blackout remains in effect across Iran as the U.S. calls for “regime change,” urging the Iranian people to “take back their country.”

A Shift in Objectives

Intelligence officials are now grappling with a shifting set of objectives from the Oval Office. Initially framed as a mission to “de-fang” nuclear capabilities, Trump’s latest rhetoric suggests a much broader goal of total regime collapse. On March 2, the President suggested the operation could take “four to five weeks,” while simultaneously hinting that U.S. forces could stay as long as necessary to ensure a “friendly” government rises in Tehran.

Critics on Capitol Hill have raised concerns over the legal basis for the strikes, noting the absence of a specific Congressional authorization for a full-scale war. Meanwhile, the administration’s “Peace Through Strength” doctrine is facing its most significant test since the 2025 border escalations
