Immigration continues to be a key political issue and remains one of President Donald Trump’s strongest areas of support among voters, according to a new poll.
A recent NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released June 15 found that 45% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 55% disapprove—a number unchanged since April. The poll surveyed 19,410 adults nationwide between May 30 and June 10 and has a margin of error of ±2.1 percentage points.
However, Trump received a majority approval—51%—on border security and immigration, making it a notable exception to his overall negative ratings.
Immigration: A Core Part of Trump’s Agenda
Trump has made immigration a centerpiece of both his presidency and 2024 campaign, emphasizing border enforcement and expanded deportations. His administration has overseen the removal of thousands of migrants to countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and El Salvador. During his campaign, he pledged even broader immigration crackdowns—a promise that energized his base.
Here’s how other recent polls reflect public opinion on his immigration policies:

Trump’s National Approval Trends
According to RealClearPolitics’ polling average, Trump’s approval rating has been sliding since early March. After peaking at a +6.2 point margin on January 27, his net approval turned negative by mid-March and dropped further to -7.2 points by April 29. As of June 20, his net approval stands at -5 points.
The New York Times’ aggregator also shows a downward trend, with Trump’s approval margin at -8 points on June 20.
A historical review by Gallup reveals that Trump’s approval ratings during the month of May—both as the 45th and 47th president—rank lower than any other modern president at the same point in their administrations.
While Trump’s immigration policies continue to resonate with a significant portion of voters, especially on border security, overall approval of his presidency remains underwater. With the 2024 election cycle behind him, his challenge now is converting strong issue-based support into broader public confidence.
