TSA Has Officially Banned 3 New Items From Checked Bags

The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has made travel a bit easier by scrapping the long-criticized rule requiring passengers to remove their shoes at security checkpoints. But a new set of restrictions could have some fliers reconsidering what they pack in their checked luggage.

The familiar 3.4-ounce liquid limit remains unchanged, meaning travelers still risk losing pricey skincare products or other items if they don’t meet the size requirement.

This week, the TSA announced three more items that are no longer allowed in checked bags—everyday essentials that some travelers might accidentally pack.

The updated ban focuses on cordless hair tools, many of which use gas cartridges or butane—both considered hazardous materials on flights. Specifically, cordless curling irons and flat irons containing gas cartridges, butane-powered hair devices, and refill cartridges for these items are now prohibited in checked baggage. Any restricted item found in luggage will be discarded.

That doesn’t mean passengers must leave their styling tools behind. TSA clarified that travelers can still bring these items in carry-on bags, as long as they are safely covered to prevent accidental activation during the flight.

The change comes as part of a broader effort to modernize air travel. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that the agency is focused on improving the passenger experience while maintaining security.

“We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience,” Noem said. “As always, security remains our top priority. Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards.”

The TSA has also expanded support for military families. In July, it introduced the “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program, which provides TSA PreCheck discounts and more expedited screening lanes for service members and their loved ones.

Earlier this week, the agency announced a partnership with CLEAR to roll out biometric “eGates” at airports nationwide. According to Axios, these will debut at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), Washington D.C.’s Reagan National (DCA), and Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) before the end of the month.

The initiative is aimed at streamlining travel ahead of major upcoming events, including next year’s FIFA World Cup and the America 250 celebrations.
