Conservative podcast host Tucker Carlson sparked a fierce international debate this week after claiming that Israeli security officials detained him and seized his passport at Ben Gurion International Airport following his on-site interview with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on February 18, 2026.

The incident — or what Carlson described as one — has drawn sharp pushback from Israeli authorities, the U.S. Embassy in Israel, and even Huckabee himself, all of whom say what Carlson experienced was nothing more than routine airport security procedure.

What Tucker Carlson Claims Happened at Ben Gurion Airport

Carlson told the British tabloid Daily Mail that after completing his interview with Huckabee, airport security personnel took his passport and escorted his executive producer into a separate room for questioning.

“Men who identified themselves as airport security took our passports, hauled our executive producer into a side room and then demanded to know what we spoke to Ambassador Huckabee about,” Carlson said, according to reporting by Al Jazeera. “It was bizarre. We’re now out of the country.”

The Daily Mail also cited two sources familiar with the matter who claimed that Israeli officials had initially not planned to allow Carlson entry into the country at all — a claim the U.S. Embassy in Israel flatly denied.

Israel, U.S. Embassy, and Huckabee All Push Back

Israeli and American officials were quick to dispute Carlson’s version of events. The Israel Airports Authority stated that Carlson and his party “were politely asked a few routine questions, in accordance with standard procedures applied to many travelers,” adding that the conversation took place in a VIP lounge room specifically to protect the group’s privacy — not to interrogate them.

The authority concluded its statement by firmly rejecting any characterization of the encounter as a detainment, according to the Jerusalem Post.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Israel told the Daily Mail that Carlson “received the same passport control questions that countless visitors to Israel, including Ambassador Huckabee and other diplomats, receive as part of normal entrance and exit from Israel.”

Ambassador Huckabee himself weighed in on social media before Carlson’s version of the story had even gone fully public. “EVERYONE who comes in/out of Israel (every country for that matter) has passports checked and routinely asked security questions,” Huckabee wrote on X, directly refuting his former Fox News colleague.

Leaked Footage Adds Another Layer to the Dispute

The controversy deepened further when security footage from Ben Gurion Airport appeared to contradict Carlson’s narrative. Video circulating on social media showed Carlson smiling and embracing a Ben Gurion Airport employee — footage that observers said was inconsistent with someone who had just been forcibly detained or intimidated by security personnel.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett responded to the episode by calling Carlson a “chickens***” on X, accusing him of lying and of deliberately constructing a false impression of his visit.

The Background: A Public Feud Between Carlson and Huckabee

The visit itself was the result of a very public dispute between the two conservative figures. Carlson had used his podcast to criticize Huckabee, accusing him of failing to intervene when Israeli settlers allegedly mistreated Christians in the occupied West Bank and in Jerusalem. Huckabee responded by publicly inviting Carlson to come to Israel and speak with him directly.

Carlson never left the airport grounds during the visit, conducting the interview with Huckabee at the terminal before departing Israel around 3 p.m. local time, according to sources cited by the Jerusalem Post — a trip that lasted only a few hours in total.

Political Fallout and Conservative Reaction

The Tucker Carlson detention claim quickly rippled through conservative political circles. Former U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene reacted on social media, writing: “American citizen and journalist Tucker Carlson detained in Israel… We won’t tolerate this. You just made it worse.”

The episode surfaced amid broader tensions within the Republican Party over U.S. policy toward Israel, including debates about American funding related to the conflict in Gaza and concerns among younger conservative voters about Israeli influence on U.S. foreign policy.

Carlson has been among the most vocal right-wing critics of Israel’s government in recent months. In a widely circulated 2025 statement, he said he found it “humiliating” that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed to exert control over the United States — a comment that earned him both fierce backlash and a notable following among anti-establishment conservatives.

As of publication, the full Tucker Carlson–Huckabee interview has not yet been publicly released.
