US support for Donald Trump attacking Iran revealed in polls

As President Donald Trump intensifies his calls for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and hints at direct U.S. military action, Americans are growing sharply divided along party lines over how involved the U.S. should be in Israel’s escalating conflict with Iran.

Why It Matters

This partisan divide highlights more than just differing views on war — it reflects the broader shift in U.S. foreign policy under Trump. While most Americans agree that Iran poses a major threat, there’s little consensus on how to deal with it. Trump’s MAGA base strongly favors tough action, but many others are wary of another U.S. military entanglement in the Middle East. With the president signaling a readiness to escalate, how the U.S. responds could reshape its role on the world stage — and impact global stability.

What to Know

Americans broadly see Iran as a serious threat:

  • 73% of voters say Iran poses a real national security threat — up 13 points from six years ago, according to a recent Fox News poll.
  • That concern spans party lines: 69% of Democrats, 82% of Republicans, and 62% of Independents agree Iran is a major concern.

But views on what to do about Iran differ sharply:

  • While 88% of MAGA Republicans and 63% of Democrats say a nuclear-armed Iran would be a serious danger, few voters support all-out war.
  • Just 8% of voters overall say the U.S. should join Israel in attacking Iran, according to Echelon Insights. Most prefer either staying out completely (41%) or using limited diplomatic or defensive measures (40%).

Support for Israel’s military strikes is split:

  • Fox News reports 49% of Americans approve of Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, while 46% disapprove.
  • Support is highest among Republicans (73%) and lowest among Democrats and Independents (both at 32%).

Most voters fear escalation:

  • 59% believe Israel’s strikes make the world more dangerous, including 74% of Democrats, 77% of Independents, and even 36% of Republicans.

Republican and MAGA Support for Military Action

Support for aggressive U.S. involvement is highest among Trump’s base:

  • 65% of MAGA Republicans back U.S. strikes on Iran, compared to 51% of traditional Republicans.
  • 60% of Trump voters believe “Israel’s war is America’s war” — that figure rises to 67% among MAGA Republicans.
  • Most Republicans want the conflict to continue until Iran’s nuclear capabilities are dismantled (52% overall, 59% of MAGA Republicans).

In contrast, a majority of all voters (53%) support pausing military action to begin negotiations with Iran.

Trump’s Standing on Foreign Policy

Despite vocal leadership on the Iran issue, Trump’s approval on foreign policy remains mixed:

  • Fox News: 42% approve, 57% disapprove
  • Echelon Insights: 47% approve, 49% disapprove

His strongest ratings remain on immigration and border security, but his numbers lag when it comes to the economy and inflation.

What People Are Saying

Daron Shaw, Fox News GOP pollster:

“The growing concern over Iran is real — but it’s also shaped by the dramatic images voters have seen in recent weeks, especially of Iranian missile strikes on Tel Aviv.”

James Johnson, J.L. Partners co-founder:

“This data shows clearly: the Republican base is not isolationist. They support strong U.S. and Israeli action to stop Iran, and they view this as a shared fight.”

What Happens Next

President Trump is expected to continue high-level talks with military and national security leaders as he considers whether to deepen U.S. involvement in the conflict with Iran — a decision that could have major consequences at home and abroad.
