A massive albino python has been captured in Newberry County, South Carolina, weeks after it was first spotted by residents. Sheriff Lee Foster told Newsweek that the initial call about the reptile came on July 31, when it was first seen near Mid Carolina High School in Prosperity.

On Monday, August 18, local animal enthusiast Warren Gallman and his family managed to capture the enormous snake. Measuring more than 12 feet long and weighing about 140 pounds, the python was caught and later showcased in videos shared by Gallman on Facebook.

According to the NY Post, Gallman decided to act when he heard the python had been spotted just two miles from his home. With help from his son, nephew, and a neighbor, the group tracked the reptile down near a railway crossing and managed to contain it after a considerable struggle. They secured the snake in a large bin and brought it home, where Gallman’s son—already a pet ball python owner—helped care for it.

“As you can see from my battle wounds, I’m about 220 pounds, and it pulled me to the grass,” Gallman told News19. “It was strong. I got a few cuts on my arm.”

Sheriff Foster later thanked Gallman and his family in a Facebook post, noting the python was likely an escaped pet since it is not native to South Carolina.

Sean Foley, curator of herpetology at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, confirmed to the NY Post that the snake was an albino reticulated python. According to Atlanta Zoo, reticulated pythons are the longest snakes in the world, capable of reaching lengths of up to 30 feet.

In a Facebook update, Gallman revealed that the python will be relocated to the Edisto Island Serpentarium in South Carolina. He explained that the move was the “most responsible option,” ensuring the animal receives the specialized care it needs.
