A woman is describing how her cousin’s wedding turned into “a circus” after several guests tried to ignore the event’s strict no-kids policy.
In a recent Reddit post, she explained that her 21-year-old cousin and her fiancé were on a tight budget and chose to keep their wedding small: no children allowed and no plus-ones, except for spouses.
Once the invitations went out, some family members began announcing that they planned to bring their kids anyway.
“She was upset,” the original poster (OP) wrote, adding that the venue had its own firm rule: no one under 21 was permitted inside. “She explained that — but nobody cares,” OP said.
Sensing that there could be trouble, the bride asked OP, who works as a licensed security guard, to take on the role of bouncer for the day.
“I agreed without even a second thought because somebody needs to make sure her wedding goes the way she wants it to,” OP wrote.

As soon as guests started arriving, things got heated.
“Our family members showed up with their kids, and holy s— it was a circus,” OP recalled. “The way I was screamed at and threatened with violence because we denied family members with children in tow has me going no contact with about 30 percent of the family now.”
As tensions rose, “the venue coordinator had to threaten to call the police to get everyone under control,” OP added.
Eventually, everyone who brought children left, and the ceremony and reception continued without further problems.
However, the fallout didn’t end there. OP said her phone has since been “blowing up” with angry calls and messages from relatives insisting she “had no right to keep them from attending a family affair and that the kids deserve to be a part of things, too.”
They also argued that, “as a mother,” OP should have sympathized and allowed the children inside.
She ended her post by asking whether she was an “a——” for enforcing the couple’s child-free wishes.

In the comments, most users backed OP, saying she did exactly what she was supposed to do.
“Family with kids should have respected the bride and groom,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “What a way to set an example for the next generation. The entitlement is strong in this family.”
Someone else pointed out that OP may have actually protected the entire event by standing firm.
“Beyond just respect, there was the venue contract. OP mentioned the venue strictly didn’t allow anyone under 21. If she had caved and let them in, the whole wedding could have been shut down or fined,” they noted.
