“We’re Witnessing a National Reality Break…” — Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Blasts Backlash to Minneapolis ICE Shooting — “It’s Pure Cognitive Dissonance”

U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is condemning what she says is a growing tendency among Americans to defend illegal immigrants accused of crimes over U.S. citizens — a shift she argues is being fueled by outrage over a deadly federal immigration operation in Minneapolis.

“We’re witnessing a national reality break, where half the country is openly siding with criminal illegal aliens over American citizens and the enforcement of federal law,” Luna said. “They’re fighting against their own safety, sovereignty, and self-interest. It’s pure cognitive dissonance.”

Her comments come as immigration enforcement has become a flashpoint after federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, during an operation in Minneapolis on January 24 — the second fatal shooting tied to immigration enforcement activity in the city in recent weeks. Video recorded by bystanders appeared to show Pretti holding a phone rather than a weapon as agents confronted him. Local officials have disputed the federal version of events, escalating public anger and helping trigger protests and political backlash.

Luna’s stance fits her broader support for hardline immigration enforcement. Donald Trump has also formally backed her re-election campaign in Florida’s 13th Congressional District, praising her as an “America First Patriot” and a “tremendous champion” for her constituents. In his endorsement, Trump highlighted issues central to his coalition — including border security, cracking down on migrant crime, backing the military and veterans, and defending Second Amendment rights — while also adding personal praise, calling Luna a “friend,” a “fighter,” and a “WINNER,” offering his “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election — SHE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”

After the endorsement, Luna thanked Trump and reiterated her commitment to advancing his priorities, including economic growth, energy dominance, and stricter immigration enforcement. Her latest rhetoric, focused on public safety and the legitimacy of federal law enforcement action, appears designed to sharpen her campaign message amid intensified national attention on the Minneapolis shooting and the broader immigration push dubbed “Operation Metro Surge,” which has drawn criticism from Democrats and some local leaders.

Meanwhile, the Pretti shooting has deepened friction between state and federal officials. Minnesota leaders have condemned federal tactics and urged ICE and Border Patrol to withdraw from the area. The Trump administration has defended the operations — and has argued that local resistance has contributed to instability and confrontation on Minneapolis streets.

By characterizing the backlash as a “national reality break,” Luna is leaning directly into the widening divide over immigration enforcement, casting herself as a blunt defender of strict federal action and of the Trump administration’s broader immigration agenda.
