President Donald Trump recently underwent a series of medical evaluations, including a heart test, following concerns over visible swelling in his legs, the White House confirmed Thursday. The announcement comes after photographs showing puffiness around Trump’s ankles and bruising on his hand sparked public speculation about the 79-year-old’s health.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the matter during a briefing, reading a statement from the president’s physician. “In recent weeks, President Trump noted mild swelling in his lower legs. In keeping with routine medical care and out of an abundance of caution, this concern was thoroughly evaluated by the White House medical unit,” she said.

As part of the evaluation, Trump underwent a bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasound to examine blood flow in his legs, along with a full blood panel. He also received an echocardiogram, which the White House says confirmed “normal cardiac structure and function,” according to The Daily Beast.

Following the tests, Trump was diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) — a common and typically benign condition where damaged veins in the legs impair blood circulation. Leavitt stressed that CVI is manageable and not considered a serious health threat.

Addressing concerns about bruising spotted on the back of Trump’s hand, Leavitt attributed it to frequent handshaking combined with the use of aspirin, which Trump reportedly takes as part of a standard cardiovascular health regimen.

“Minor soft tissue irritation from handshaking, along with aspirin use, accounts for the discoloration,” she explained.

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Chronic Venous Insufficiency occurs when leg veins struggle to send blood back to the heart, often due to damage. While early symptoms can be mild, untreated CVI can lead to more serious health complications over time.

The White House’s disclosures come as public scrutiny of Trump’s health continues to grow, especially in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms and possible re-election efforts.
