Whoopi Goldberg didn’t appreciate co-host Sunny Hostin sliding her a legal note during the Monday, Nov. 3 episode of The View.
The exchange happened as Goldberg, 69, Hostin, 57, and the other panelists were discussing President Donald Trump and the ongoing government shutdown. During the conversation, Goldberg joked about Trump “using an autopen,” a device that replicates a signature.
Although it remains unclear whether Trump, 79, has used an autopen during his second term, he has frequently accused his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, of relying on one to sign official documents.
Following Goldberg’s quip, Hostin — a former attorney who often weighs in on legal topics — passed her a blue index card across the table. The moment caught co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin’s attention, prompting her to say, “I love when Sunny passes notes!”
“What the hell? What?” Goldberg asked as Hostin clarified, “We don’t know if Trump used an autopen.”
“It was a joke!” Goldberg replied, tearing up the note and calling it “ridiculous.”
Goldberg then addressed the audience directly, expressing her frustration: “The hardest thing about this job now is no one understands nuance. You know, when you hear a joke, when somebody is fooling around, when they’re not saying something specific — especially on this show. I’m very specific when I’m pointing stuff out. When I’m making jokes, you know when I’m making jokes.”
This isn’t the first time Goldberg has lost her patience on The View over something Trump-related. Last May, Trump mocked her on Truth Social by reposting a meme suggesting she’d leave the country if he were re-elected. He added the caption: “Canada doesn’t want you Whoopi, NOBODY DOES!!!”
Goldberg fired back on-air: “Look — I’m not going anywhere. And it’s not for the reason, you little snowflake — it’s not for the reason you think. He said nobody wanted me. Honey… it wouldn’t matter if no one here wanted me. But I know where I’m going to be ’cause I got a contract. So I’m going to be where I’m wanted for the next couple of years.”

Trump has continued to bring up Biden’s alleged use of the autopen, even using it to question the legitimacy of official documents signed during Biden’s presidency. Recently, Trump refused to include Biden’s portrait in a new “Presidential Walk of Fame” he unveiled outside the West Wing. Instead, between two portraits of himself, he displayed an image of an autopen signing Biden’s name.
