A woman’s trust in her marriage began to waver after her husband returned from a work trip that raised unsettling questions.

In a Reddit post, a 30-year-old woman shared that she and her 40-year-old husband have been married for four years and share two young children, ages one and two.

“Our marriage has had its normal ups and downs, but he’s never given me a reason to think he might cheat — until now,” she wrote.

Recently, her husband went on a weeklong work training trip to Delaware. The couple typically talked every night and even fell asleep with the phone on. But one evening, communication abruptly stopped.

“I had a small work get-together and got home around 9 p.m. He knew and was fine with it. After getting the kids to bed, I tried calling him around 10:30 p.m. I called three times but couldn’t reach him. I figured he had fallen asleep early,” she said.

The next morning, he called and explained that he’d gone to bed early because he was tired. But while they were on the phone, she heard something that unsettled her.

“While we were talking, I suddenly heard a woman’s voice nearby say, ‘I am not having an affair!’ clear as day,” she recalled. “He sighed loudly afterward, but I brushed it off, assuming it was someone outside his hotel room.”

When he returned home, her husband chatted about the trip and his coworkers. During the conversation, he casually mentioned something that immediately caught her attention — he had invited a female coworker into his hotel room.

“Apparently, their rooms were connected by an adjoining door, and he wanted to ‘see what the other room looked like,’ so he asked her to open the shared door so they could check each other’s rooms out,” the woman explained. “I asked when that happened, and he said it was the same night we couldn’t reach each other.”

Now, she’s questioning whether she’s overreacting. “If this was your husband, what would you have thought? Am I overreacting?” she asked.

Commenters overwhelmingly sided with her. One person wrote, “That ‘I’m not having an affair!’ line is enough to make things suspicious. And married people do not invite coworkers into their hotel rooms. Period.”

Another commenter added, “Are you sure he accidentally let it slip, or was he just being open with you? There’s a huge difference there.”
