Wife Decided to Keep Stray Dog Despite Husband’s Refusal. Now It’s Tearing His Marriage Apart

A man turned to Reddit after weeks of mounting tension in his marriage, saying a stray dog his wife brought home during a rainstorm has become the center of constant conflict.

In his post, he explained that what started as a temporary effort to help an animal in need quickly turned into a long-term arrangement he says he never agreed to. He recalled that his wife texted him a photo of “an ugly dog all muddy,” telling him she was bringing it home to try to locate its owners. He assumed the plan was strictly short-term.

The couple said they tried to do the right things: posting on neighborhood apps, taking the dog to a local shelter, and checking for a microchip. According to the man, the shelter found no microchip, said it was at capacity, and sent them home with a leash and no clear next steps.

They then reached out to multiple shelters and rescue groups, but he said they kept hearing similar responses. On the neighborhood app, he added, people didn’t offer practical help—only encouragement to keep the dog, with comments like “poor baby” and “she chose you.”

After about a month with no owner identified, the man said his wife decided on her own that they were keeping the dog.

“I said I didn’t want a dog, but she said we were ‘keeping it anyway,’” he wrote. He told her that if the dog stayed, she would be responsible for all care—cleaning, food, vet bills, and grooming—and that the costs would come from her personal spending money. He said she agreed, insisting he would eventually “warm up” to the dog.

He said that never happened. Instead, everyday situations became flashpoints. When the dog jumped on furniture, ate his food, or got sick, he refused to clean up after it, stating, “I don’t clean the mess.”

One argument, he wrote, erupted after his wife forgot to bring the dog inside. He said he was in the living room, heard barking, and didn’t intervene—while his wife insisted the dog was “freezing,” even though it was 59 degrees outside.

Things escalated again when the dog went into heat and stained their bed after getting out of her kennel. The man said he told his wife to wash the sheets because it was “disgusting.” He claimed she accused him of being “cruel” and demanded he start helping. He refused, reiterating that he never agreed to keeping the dog and that it remained “100% her problem.”

With the dispute still unresolved, he asked Reddit users for perspective.

Commenters largely agreed that the wife shouldn’t have made a permanent decision unilaterally, especially after he repeatedly said he didn’t want a pet. At the same time, many expressed concern that the dog was suffering amid the hostility at home.

“I adore dogs and cats, and every one that has come into our home has been agreed upon by every adult in the house,” one commenter wrote. “NTA. But you and your wife need to figure this out because that poor dog is the one suffering while you two fight.”

Others focused on immediate animal welfare concerns, urging veterinary care—particularly spaying—given the dog’s heat cycle and the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.
