A woman in Arizona says a crash-detection alert from her husband’s motorcycle helmet helped her find him after a serious accident — and may have saved his life.

On Friday, Jan. 2, Dustin Hayes was riding his motorcycle when he crashed around 9:00 p.m. on New River Road between Carefree Highway and I-17, according to local outlet Fox 10 Phoenix.

Dustin was wearing a helmet equipped with a Cardo Packtalk Pro Bluetooth device, which sent an emergency alert to his wife, Brooke Hayes.

“I got a message on my phone that said ‘urgent,’ so I opened it,” Brooke told Fox 10. “It said Dustin might have been in an accident. I thought, ‘I’ll just drive out there — it’s about 30 minutes — just to double-check.’”

Brooke later explained on a GoFundMe page she created that the helmet system not only warned her of a possible crash but also provided a location pin. When her husband didn’t answer repeated calls, she contacted police while driving toward the alert location.

“When I got to the pin drop, I didn’t see anything,” she wrote. “But I had a gut feeling, so I walked the road with my flashlight. I saw his bike, ran over, and found him. Cars driving by couldn’t see him, and his bike had flown over a fence.”

She described the moment as horrifying, saying her husband was badly injured and lying in an area completely hidden from passing traffic. According to Fox 10, Dustin had been thrown off the road where no one would have noticed him.

“He was in extremely bad shape. I’ll never get that image out of my head,” Brooke said.

Police arrived about 10 minutes later and were reportedly shocked that Dustin was still alive after being injured for more than 30 minutes.

“I wouldn’t have known where he was or the position he was in,” Brooke told Fox 10. “I don’t think anyone would have found him until morning.”

Brooke believes her husband crashed while trying to avoid an animal on the road. Dustin is currently in a medically induced coma and has suffered extensive injuries.

“He has broken just about everything,” she said.

Doctors reported that Dustin sustained more than 20 broken bones, including injuries to his neck and spine, along with a concussion and a brain bleed. He is expected to be brought out of the induced coma.

Despite the trauma, Brooke found a moment of humor in the ordeal. “Now I can say forever, ‘I saved your life. Do the dishes — I saved your life,’” she joked.

The GoFundMe campaign launched to support the family has raised more than $8,000 toward a $9,000 goal. Brooke wrote that Dustin faces a long recovery and will be unable to work for an extended period.

“He has a very long road ahead of him,” she said. “The next few months will be challenging with surgeries, rehab, and doctor appointments. Any help with rent, utilities, and basic expenses would mean everything to our family.”
