Kathy Aldredge spent nearly 20 years chasing the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of her close friend Mike Williams. Now, in ABC News Studios’ upcoming true-crime docuseries Mr. & Mrs. Murder, premiering July 30 on Hulu, Aldredge finally shares her story — and the disturbing twists that followed her husband’s affair with Williams’ widow.
“I feel a lot of satisfaction,” Aldredge tells PEOPLE. “I’ve waited a long time to speak on this, and now I finally can.”
The four-part series explores the December 2000 disappearance of Mike Williams, a 31-year-old father who vanished while duck hunting on Lake Seminole in Florida. At the time, authorities speculated he had drowned or been killed by alligators. But Aldredge, along with Mike’s mother, Cheryl Williams, suspected something far more sinister — especially after Aldredge’s husband, Brian Winchester, began an affair with Mike’s wife, Denise.
“That betrayal ran deeper than anything,” Aldredge says in the series’ trailer. “They didn’t just stab me in the back. They stabbed me in the soul.”
Though Kathy and Brian eventually divorced, they remained in contact because of their child. Meanwhile, her suspicions only grew stronger, prompting her and Cheryl to quietly begin their own investigation. They worked undercover, collaborated with police, and never let the case go cold — despite years of pushback and community denial.
Their persistence ultimately led to justice. Brian confessed to killing Mike, and both he and Denise were eventually convicted for their roles in the murder — 17 years after the crime.
But Aldredge believes there’s still more to the story.
“There’s a window that’s still open,” she tells PEOPLE. “I feel like Brian and Denise were protected for years. The investigation was stalled — and we still don’t fully know why.”
The docuseries dives into how Aldredge and Cheryl overcame obstacles, including law enforcement resistance and community criticism, to expose the truth. For Aldredge, the journey was harrowing.
“Revisiting everything took me back to a dark place,” she admits. “But this case became an obsession. It connected me and Cheryl in a way that never faded, no matter how much time passed.”
Mr. & Mrs. Murder, produced by Plum Pictures and ABC News Studios, begins streaming July 30 on Hulu.
