Woman Allows Friend to Bring Dogs Over, but They Refuse to Pay for House Cleaning After Pets Leave Hair ‘Everywhere’

Bringing pets to a friend’s home can come with complications — as one Reddit user recently learned.

The poster explained that after a close family member died, they had to “drop things rather quickly” and make a last-minute, five-hour trip back to their hometown. When they told a friend about the sudden visit, the friend offered to host them for a few days and agreed that they could bring their two dogs along.

The dogs — a Labrador and a German Shepherd — are, according to the poster, well behaved but “large breed dogs” who can be “a bit much for many non-dog owners.”

“I made the 5 hour drive down and my friend came out to greet me. When unpacking the car I let the dogs out and immediately they went off to toilet (since it was a long trip),” they wrote. “My lab went into the bushes to pee but the GSD began to pee in the middle of the front porch (don’t ask me why, but she much prefers peeing on hard surfaces) and my friend immediately freaked out.”

The poster apologized but admitted they didn’t fully understand the reaction because the accident happened outside.

Aside from that moment, they said the visit was “fine” and “non-eventful.”

“They let me know when they need out and I clean up the poo straight away. I keep them under good supervision,” they wrote.

Things took a turn after the stay was over.

“At the end of the trip, my friend sent me a text saying ‘Hey, as you’d know the house is quite messy because of the dogs, and I’m going to hire a cleaner. Would you mind paying me for that?’” the poster recalled. “I was a bit taken aback. The dogs had zero accidents inside. Didn’t break anything. I asked what she meant, and she explained that there was dog hair everywhere.”

The poster acknowledged that their dogs shed a lot but felt their friend should have simply asked them to tidy up.

“If she’d asked me to vacuum up after them I would have. But she didn’t,” they wrote. “I also don’t think a deep clean would be necessary. A quick vacuum of the carpets, couch, bed, etc. would be more than enough to remove any trace.”

Because the friend had volunteered to host them — fully aware that two large dogs were coming — the poster didn’t think they should have to cover the cleaning bill. They turned to Reddit to ask whether they were wrong for refusing to pay.

Most commenters sided firmly with the friend, arguing that the guest should have anticipated the mess and taken responsibility for cleaning.

“So let me get this straight, and I say this as an owner of one lab but have had two at the same time in the past. A friend allows you to stay with two large, shedding dogs last minute and you make no effort to vacuum or otherwise contribute to cleaning before you leave,” one commenter wrote. “I’d be so embarrassed to leave without cleaning after staying that I’d have paid for the cleaner in a heartbeat. You appear incredibly entitled and disrespectful to your friend and a clear AH.”

Another pointed out that the host had likely saved the pet owner significant money: “She’s not used to pet hair. You saved money by staying with her instead of a hotel and dog boarding. Paying for a cleaning will still have saved you money.”
