A woman in Quebec has been arrested following the death of a newborn who was discovered abandoned in a bus shelter in Longueuil.

Authorities said the infant was found on the morning of Monday, Oct. 28, according to a statement posted by the Longueuil police service. Despite lifesaving efforts, the baby was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. after being taken to the hospital.

Police received the report about the infant at 6:30 a.m. and began emergency measures immediately.

Later on Wednesday, officers confirmed that a 33-year-old woman had been arrested in connection with the newborn’s death, though her identity has not been released.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), a police spokesperson said at a press conference that the woman could face a charge of infanticide.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the woman is the baby’s mother, CBC reported.

The region’s ambulance service told CBC that the infant was found naked and cold, with the placenta still attached. Police said the woman in custody is currently undergoing both physical and mental health evaluations.
