How someone treats waitstaff can say a lot about who they are — and one woman says that’s exactly why she ended things with her boyfriend.
The 20-year-old shared on Reddit that she recently broke up with her 22-year-old boyfriend after he caused a scene during their three-month anniversary dinner at a nice restaurant.
She explained that they’re both college students on tight budgets, so this was their first time splurging on an expensive meal. When the waiter came by to pour their water, a small amount spilled onto the table while filling her boyfriend’s glass. None of it actually got on him.
Despite that, her boyfriend “immediately made a scene,” she wrote. He yelled at the waiter and demanded to speak to the manager.
When the manager came over, her boyfriend claimed the waiter had spilled water on him and insisted they deserved something free for the inconvenience — even though that wasn’t true.
Both the waiter and the manager apologized and offered them a complimentary dessert, but the woman said the entire dinner felt uncomfortable after that.

After the meal, she decided to break up with him. She explained that she “knew he lied,” but what bothered her even more was “the way he yelled at the waiter,” calling it completely unnecessary.
Her ex later apologized and admitted he shouldn’t have lied, saying he thought it was a way to help him afford the dinner. She told him that for her, it wasn’t just the lie — it was that he was willing to talk down to someone in the service industry just to get something out of it.
Although he has been trying to persuade her to reconsider, she said she still feels “really uncomfortable” about what happened and has stood by her decision.
Commenters on Reddit reassured her that she made the right call.
“Cringe. Great job for dumping him,” one person wrote.
Another added, “You did the right thing. It’s not just about how someone treats you but how they treat others,” noting that the pair clearly had very different ideas about integrity and values.
