Woman Is Angry That Her Parents Want to ‘Go Out’ Instead of Spending Time with Their Grandchild During Visit: ‘Is This Wrong’

A woman is questioning whether she’s right to feel hurt after her parents decided to go out during their visit — even though her young daughter was home sick and wanted their company.

The mom shared her story in the “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum on Mumsnet.com, a popular U.K. discussion board where users seek advice about family and social dilemmas. In her post, she explained that her parents were visiting from abroad and “like to go out every day.”

However, on this particular day, her daughter came down with a fever and vomited, forcing the family to cancel a planned beach outing.

“Plus, it’s a Sunday and we usually relax a bit and don’t go out all the time as [my] parents do,” she wrote. Her daughter, she added, “is wanting lots of cuddles from them and [wants] them to stay home today.”

Despite that, her parents decided to go out anyway — and asked to be “picked up in a few hours.”

“Is this wrong of them?” she asked other users. “Would you stay in with your family [if you’d] come to visit?”

The majority of commenters felt the woman was overreacting, saying her parents were within their rights to enjoy their trip — especially since her daughter might be contagious.

“They’re on holiday as well as visiting you,” one person replied. “I think it’s fine for them to go out for the day rather than stay at home with a vomiting child. I’d be trying to keep my distance as well!”

Another user agreed, writing, “I would be encouraging them to go out and lessen the risk of exposure to illness, and most definitely wouldn’t expect them to cuddle her when she is unwell.”

Someone else added, “I don’t really understand why everyone needs to stay in because your daughter is ill.”

“I’d be getting out of the way too, tbh [to be honest],” another commenter wrote. “Is it not better for them to be out of your hair for the day?”
