A 30-year-old woman walked out of her friend’s wedding after realizing there was nothing suitable for her to eat—but now she’s second-guessing her choice.

The woman, a vegetarian, shared on Reddit that her 29-year-old friend, the bride, had always known about her dietary restrictions. When she RSVP’d to the wedding, she “checked the vegetarian option box.”

Yet, when the big day arrived, no vegetarian meal had been prepared for her.

“At the reception, when dinner was served, my plate came out with chicken. I flagged it and the server said they didn’t have any vegetarian meals prepared,” she explained.

Without a main course to enjoy, she “ended up eating bread and salad while everyone else had a full dinner.” She stayed for the speeches but quietly left for home to eat once the dancing began.

“The next day, the bride texted me saying she noticed I left early and that it was ‘hurtful,'” the woman recalls. “I told her honestly that I felt excluded and hungry all night. She got defensive and said I was ‘overreacting over food’ and should’ve just ‘enjoyed the moment.'”

Although she remains upset about the situation, she now feels “guilty” and wonders if leaving was the wrong choice.

People in the Reddit comments expressed disbelief that the venue offered no meat-free alternatives, especially since it had been listed on the original menu.

“I have catered wedding events. It’s just unbelievable to me that the venue did not have anything vegetarian they could put together at short notice,” one user wrote. “I always had one spare for each dish and allowed for vegetarian and last-minute gluten-free diets. The contract may say strictly the number of plates ordered—but we’ve all been in situations where someone drops a plate of food, someone gets sick, or someone has a dietary issue.”

Others were equally surprised that the bride’s response was angry rather than checking in on her guest.

“My partner and I left a wedding early last weekend because he was feeling unwell. We didn’t make a fuss, just slipped out. The next day, the groom texted to make sure we were both okay,” another user shared. “I find it a bit strange that the OP’s friend didn’t ask if they were alright before going on the attack and talking about being hurt.”
