Woman Rushes Stray Cat to Vet After It’s Hit by Truck. Days Later, She Gets Unexpected Call 

Seconds can mean the difference between life and death — and for one cat, it truly did.

Fiona Begg was taking a walk in Ontario’s cottage country one Friday morning when she noticed something unusual. As she walked down the quiet street, she made eye contact with a gray cat. Just moments later, the cat was struck by a truck.

Begg, 28, tells PEOPLE that what she did next changed everything.

She says she immediately ran into the street, stopped traffic, and picked up the injured cat. Another woman who saw the accident told Begg there was a veterinary clinic nearby.

“When I got there, the staff dropped everything and rushed him into the back, immediately giving him pain medication,” Begg recalls. “The vet told me they’d do what they could, but it was unlikely he would survive.”

Heartbroken, Begg walked home in tears, convinced the cat would have to be euthanized.

But days later, Begg received a voicemail from the clinic. The cat had survived. Even though he was recovering, no owner had come forward.

When the staff asked Begg if she wanted to adopt him, she immediately said yes. A week after the accident, she and her sister drove two hours to bring him home.

“Since I brought him home, he’s been sleeping a lot as he recovers,” she shares. “Before I picked him up, he had bloodwork, vaccinations, and was neutered. I’ve been slowly introducing him to my boxer, Link. They became instant best friends.”

Begg named the cat Lucky Chance. While he’s adjusting well, he still needs dental surgery after breaking a tooth in the accident.

“My focus right now is on helping him gain weight, heal fully, and build trust,” Begg says. “I want him to feel safe and finally be able to rest.”

Her story touched millions after she shared a TikTok video that went viral with over 12.5 million views. She hopes it inspires others to act when they see an animal in need.

“I believe it’s our responsibility to protect all living things. Some people might have assumed he was already gone or left him in the road, but I couldn’t,” she explains. “If someone can’t help themselves, there are many animal rescue places or clinics they can call.”

Begg says she’s forever thankful to the veterinary staff and to everyone who showed love for Lucky Chance.

“He truly lives up to his name,” she adds.
