Woman Says Boyfriend Got ‘Extremely Upset’ About Her Mom’s Engagement, Wonders If There’s Something More Going on

A 28-year-old woman turned to Reddit seeking perspective after her boyfriend reacted strongly to her mother’s recent engagement.

According to her post, her 29-year-old boyfriend became “extremely upset” when he learned about the engagement, insisting it put pressure on him to propose as well.

“I told him it doesn’t. I said they aren’t getting married anytime soon,” she wrote.

Later, however, she discovered that her mother and her fiancé were planning to marry sooner than expected. When she shared that update, her boyfriend responded with irritation, saying, “I thought they weren’t doing that.”

Confused by his reaction, the woman asked Reddit users whether his behavior was unusual and where his apparent “attitude” might be coming from.

In the comments, she provided additional background after users began questioning the dynamics between her boyfriend and her mother, who is in her early 40s.

One commenter suggested the situation was strange, even speculating that her boyfriend might have a crush on her mom. In response, the woman revealed that her father had once hinted there may have been something between her boyfriend and her mother before the couple started dating. She added, however, that her father “likes drama,” which made her reluctant to take the claim seriously.

She went on to explain that months earlier, her father had accused her boyfriend — with whom she shares children — of having slept with her mother after her parents’ divorce, alleging both had been lying about it for years. When confronted, her boyfriend denied the accusation, and she admitted she has not yet asked her mother directly.

Addressing her boyfriend’s reaction more directly, the woman said she asked him outright why the engagement bothered him so much. He again insisted it was because it put pressure on him to propose, noting that several other couples close to them had also recently gotten married.

She also shared that her mother, whom she described as “super close” to her son-in-law, confirmed hearing similar concerns from him.

“She said he told her he didn’t have me a ring and it made him look bad,” the woman wrote. “Which it doesn’t in my opinion.”

Despite the explanations, the woman said she still feels there’s something she may be missing.

As one Reddit user summed it up, the situation seems to boil down to two possibilities: either he had hoped to propose around the same time — or his feelings toward her mother may be more complicated than they appear.
