Woman Says Doctor Dismissed Her Concerns After ‘9 Minutes.’ She Still Followed Her Instincts, and Then Her Life Changed Forever

A woman says she received a life-altering diagnosis after she pushed for answers when a specialist brushed off her concerns.

Speaking with Mamamia, a woman identified only as Jillian said she first noticed a growth on her nose. But between family responsibilities and her job as a schoolteacher, she didn’t get it checked right away.

That changed after a student pointed it out. Jillian recalled the student saying, “You’ve got funny red lines on your nose,” which prompted her to book an appointment with her general practitioner. From there, she was referred to a specialist.

According to Jillian, the specialist told her to stop using her decongestant spray and ended the appointment after just nine minutes.

Jillian admitted she doesn’t always prioritize her health — and initially, she tried not to worry. “I don’t normally listen to my body,” she told Mamamia. “It tells me a lot of different things, so it’s hard to know.”

Still, she kept watching the area. Over time, she said the red lines grew brighter — and eventually, she developed a lump.

Jillian then sought out another skin specialist. Mamamia reported that the doctor took biopsies and referred her to a general surgeon, who told Jillian the issue was “self-contained” and had “its own blood supply.”

She underwent several more biopsies, all while struggling to breathe through one nostril. “If you looked at me, you couldn’t actually see the lump. But I felt it changing — it felt like something was crawling on my skin,” she told Mamamia.

A final biopsy later confirmed she had skin cancer — and that the growth had hardened.

“The surgeons didn’t know where the edges of the cancer were, and they were trying to be conservative and not take more than they had to,” Jillian explained to Mamamia. “So, for the first surgery, they just took what looked cancerous to them.”

But it wasn’t the end of it. Jillian said she needed multiple follow-up surgeries, and each one hit harder than the last.

“Hearing after the first one, ‘No, that actually wasn’t enough, we need to do it again,’ was really quite devastating,” she told Mamamia.

“I knew when they brought the tissue box over before the doctor came and saw me that it was not good news,” she added. “I got a bit numb. It was just, ‘No, we need to go back and do more.’ And that was really hard to hear every time. The more they took out, the more I didn’t feel like myself. I didn’t know who I felt like.”

After the growth was removed and she completed radiation treatment, Jillian underwent a series of plastic surgery procedures to reconstruct her face.

“I didn’t even know plastic surgeons did that sort of thing. I thought they were all the boobs and [butts],” she joked to Mamamia.

Her last procedure took place in November. Jillian said it helped her feel like herself again.

“It was really good to feel more like myself and have a bit more confidence in myself,” she told Mamamia. “That was really, really important — to feel a bit more normal.”

Jillian said it could take up to 12 months for swelling to fully subside. After that, she will undergo MRIs twice a year to ensure the cancer hasn’t returned.

Looking back, she shared one clear message for others:

“You need to listen to yourself. If you think something’s wrong, get it checked out.”
