A woman is wondering if she’s really at fault for not labeling her dog food jars after a bizarre kitchen incident with her aunt.
In a post on Reddit’s AITA forum, the 25-year-old explained that her 60-year-old aunt accidentally ate some of her dog’s food while visiting — and now the entire family knows about it.
According to the woman, part of her kitchen is set aside for her dog’s supplies: food storage, bowls, food toppers, spoons, wet food, supplements, and cleaning sponges. The toppers, which add flavor to the dog’s meals, come in varieties like sirloin, mussels, fish, lamb, and chicken.
The toppers are kept on a shelf with the other dog-related items. Each jar contains powder and a small spoon, and while the labels explain their purpose, they don’t feature any dog imagery. “That’s just how the brand labels products,” she noted.
When her aunt came over for help setting up her phone, she wandered into the kitchen for a glass of water. The woman didn’t think much of it, even when she noticed her aunt holding one of the topper jars.
“I thought she might be curious because she has a dog too,” the Redditor wrote. “Next thing I hear is her saying it tastes quite nice. I immediately gasped and told her I use that for my dog.”
Although the toppers are safe for humans, her aunt was horrified. The woman apologized, but her aunt grew angry, accusing her of “letting” her eat dog food — despite the jars being stored with clearly dog-related items.
Now, the aunt has told the woman’s mother, other aunts, cousins, and “anyone who will listen” about the mishap. Some relatives found it funny, others dismissed it, while a few criticized the woman for being careless.
The woman is now debating whether to adopt a more obvious labeling system, even though she doesn’t believe she was responsible for her aunt’s taste test.
Most commenters sided with her, pointing out that she never told her aunt to start sampling random jars in her kitchen. One person even suggested her family give the aunt a new nickname: “Snoopy.”
“If you open cupboards in someone else’s home and help yourself, no one ‘let you’ eat whatever you consumed without asking!” one user wrote.
Another joked, “Did she … just … put the spoon back in there? Asking for your dog.”
