Wedding Guest Slammed for Skipping Close Friend’s Reception Because It ‘Wasn’t Her Vibe’
A woman is questioning whether she was in the wrong after choosing to leave a close friend’s wedding right after the ceremony because the reception didn’t match her personal “vibe.”
Sharing her story on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the 24-year-old explained that she attended her friend’s church ceremony over the weekend but decided to drive home instead of going to the hotel reception afterward, assuming she wouldn’t “have much fun.”
“Here’s the thing, I’ve always loved very fancy outdoor weddings, like at a really nice venue in the mountains, beach, a nice ranch, things like that,” she wrote. “Hers was in a hotel ballroom, which is more typical and not really my vibe. I’ve been to those more typical weddings before, and know that I don’t tend to find them that fun.”

Once the ceremony ended, she said she “quickly” told the bride, 23, that she’d be skipping the reception but encouraged her to “have fun” without her. The bride was reportedly “pretty upset” that her close friend wasn’t there to celebrate and later vented to their mutual friends.
That night, several of the bride’s girlfriends who did attend the reception texted the woman to say that bailing on such an important part of the day was “rude” and that she was “being selfish.”
The Reddit poster, however, felt the backlash was overblown, writing, “I honestly think people are making it a bigger deal than it really is.”
Most commenters strongly disagreed and labeled her “the a——” in the situation, emphasizing that friendships are about showing up, even when an event isn’t your ideal setting.
“It’s not about you,” the top comment read in part. “Check the main character energy and show up for the people in your life — otherwise, do not be surprised when people in your life stop showing up for you.”
Many users also called her “spoiled” and “unbelievably self-centered and immature” for dismissing the hotel ballroom reception as beneath her preferences and ignoring that the couple had already paid for her meal and seat.

“YTA (you’re the a——), especially if you RSVPd you would be there,” one commenter wrote. “They charge for the number of guests. You owe her an apology, especially using the excuse, ‘It’s not my vibe because I only like fancy weddings.’ Spoiler alert, it’s not for you, it’s for the marrying couple to celebrate with friends and family. So dumb, and your friend deserves better friends.”
Another person added, “When you RSVPd for this wedding, that undoubtedly included both ceremony and reception. This means the couple paid for your seat, food and drink at the reception and you wasted their money.”
