Woman Tells Boyfriend About a Dress She Really Wants. Then He Buys It for His Mom

A woman was left stunned after discovering that her boyfriend had bought her dream dress — only to gift it to his mother instead of her.

Sharing her experience on Reddit, the anonymous 23-year-old explained she’s been with her boyfriend for three years. During a recent shopping trip, she spotted a “gorgeous” dress in her favorite color.

“He looked at the dress and said it was beautiful, but it was rather expensive ($200), so we didn’t end up getting it,” she wrote. “For weeks after this, I would constantly talk about the dress to him — how I couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful it was, and how I hoped I could save up for it since we’ve been budgeting lately.”

Her boyfriend would often acknowledge her excitement and even complimented how great it would look on her.

When her birthday arrived, the couple hosted a small get-together at their home. But when his mother walked in wearing the very dress she’d been dreaming about, she was floored.

“I was stunned. I thought maybe he told her about it and she got one herself, but that wasn’t the case,” she wrote. “In my surprise, I said, ‘OMG there’s no way! That’s the same dress I was looking at and dying for for months,’ and she replied, ‘Oh really? Zayne [my boyfriend] gave it to me as a gift last month.’”

The woman said she was “shocked and confused” — feelings that only deepened when she opened her own birthday gift from him: a $50 Sephora gift card.

“For the rest of the night, I sat quietly in a corner, lost in my head and trying to make sense of what had just happened,” she recalled.

When she finally confronted him about it, his response floored her again.

“He told me I needed ‘to be humbled a bit’ because I got way too overly excited about something as trivial as a dress,” she said.

She added that his mother had no idea about the situation and believed the dress was simply a kind gift from her son.

The Reddit post sparked outrage among readers, many of whom urged her to walk away from the relationship.

One user wrote, “I’m sorry but nobody is that obtuse. Plus, he told [the original poster] it was too expensive, and then went back later and bought it for his mom! There’s no sugar coating this. It’s a huge red flag — get out now.”

Another added, “What he did was calculated and cruel, and if you stay with him, it will only get worse.”

In an update to her post, the woman confirmed that the relationship is officially over.

“He keeps calling me, but I won’t answer — and there’s nothing he can say or do to change that,” she wrote. “I’ve taken this as a sign of a side of him that he’d hidden so well until now.”
