A woman has sparked debate online after admitting she lied about being sick to avoid attending her sister’s wedding — choosing instead to go to a job interview that she described as a “life-changing opportunity.”
Posting on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the 24-year-old woman explained that she told her sister she had contracted COVID-19 the day before the wedding. In reality, she was preparing for a high-profile interview in another state.
“On the day of her wedding, I had a very high-profile job interview in another state and when I asked if I could reschedule, they said unfortunately they couldn’t and I would lose out if I couldn’t make it,” she wrote. “I know this sounds crazy to miss someone’s wedding for, but this was a huge career opportunity for me and would change my life.”
The woman said she and her sister, who is 36, are not particularly close. The two reconnected only recently after years of limited contact. Because of that distance, she felt the decision to prioritize her career over the wedding was justified.
Still, she chose not to tell her sister the truth. She feared sharing her plans might “jinx” the interview or invite unwanted questions from other family members. Instead, she confided only in her aunt, who advised her to give the bride at least a brief explanation — advice she ultimately ignored.
“I told my sister a day beforehand that I had a fever and tested positive for COVID,” the woman admitted. “She was upset but understanding.”
After learning the truth, her aunt called her “a bad person” for lying, saying she had put others in an awkward position by hiding the real reason for her absence.
The Reddit poster acknowledged that her actions were questionable, but she defended herself, calling it a “harmless lie” that spared her from uncomfortable conversations.

Although some Reddit users suggested the move might be worth it if she landed the job, most disagreed. Many commenters criticized her for missing a once-in-a-lifetime family event and for deceiving her sister in the process.
“It absolutely wasn’t worth skipping a once-in-a-lifetime family wedding,” one top comment read. “I can’t imagine missing a family member’s wedding for anything.”

Others questioned the integrity of the prospective employer, expressing disbelief that a company would refuse to reschedule an interview for such an important occasion.
“I can’t imagine a prospective employer not being willing to reschedule an interview for a family wedding,” one user wrote. “Who would want to work for a company like that?”
As of now, it remains unclear whether the woman was offered the position.
