A woman on Reddit shared that her first-time grandmother wants to be called “Big Mama” instead of the usual “grandma” — but she isn’t okay with it.
She explained that just days after announcing her pregnancy, her mother suddenly said she wanted the baby to call her “Big Mama.”
“I told her nicely I was uncomfortable with it because I should be the only person who is even remotely considered mama or any type of mama,” she wrote. “She went into a whole spree about how she is the grandparent and she gets to be called anything she wants and I need to learn to ‘respect my elders.’”
The expecting mom said she tried to compromise by suggesting more traditional grandparent names. But her mother insisted she would only accept “Big Mama.”

The disagreement has grown into a bigger fight, with the pregnant woman now questioning whether she even wants her child to meet her mother.
“After I was done talking to my mom about her never seeing her grandkid, she then started calling me names and said I would never be a good mother,” she shared. “I told her once I move out of Minnesota (moving in a month!) I was never going to contact her and she was never going to be in my life.”
She ended the post by asking if she was “in the wrong,” seeking advice from other Reddit users.
Most commenters supported her decision, saying it was reasonable to set boundaries.
“You need to start distancing yourself from her now before the baby is born. Stop visiting, stop calling, stop answering her calls. Don’t answer the door if she comes over,” one user advised. “Talk to your husband so you are on the same page. Move as soon as you can and don’t give her any information about your new location.”
