A woman recently shared her frustration on Reddit after discovering that her husband gave away the dinner she had spent hours preparing — all while she was asleep.
In her post, she explained that she had gone to the store and bought “2 roasts for a total of around $40, veggies, etc., and made both roasts so the cost with everything was probably $50+.” Her goal was to cook enough food to last for several days so she could take a break from constant meal prep.
“I had been complaining to my husband recently that I am tired of cooking big meals for every meal and how much it’s draining me,” she wrote. “I spent all night cooking these roasts. I did this so we could store the extra and use it for a few days to give me a break.”
After finishing the meal, she was exhausted, and her husband encouraged her to nap while he watched the kids. “He took over with the kids alone and told me to take a nap,” she noted, adding that they typically share parenting duties but support each other when one needs rest.
When she woke up, though, she found that most of the food was gone. “He and the kids ate some of the roast and then he gave the rest to my sister’s family,” she said. Her husband told her she was “upset for no reason” and claimed there wasn’t enough room in the refrigerator to store the leftovers.
What bothered her most was that she had cooked extra specifically to save time and energy for the next few days — and she didn’t even get to enjoy any of it. “To clarify something, I didn’t eat any but I don’t eat meat so he knew I wasn’t going to,” she said. “So after I got up I had to cook dinner for myself, him, and the kids because there was basically no roast left.”

She admitted she hadn’t explicitly told her husband that the food was meant to last for multiple meals, but assumed it was obvious. “I do feel like I should’ve specifically mentioned that it was meant for a few days, but there was so much I never thought he was going to give it away,” she wrote. “I just got really silent and he knew I was upset.”
The Reddit community largely agreed with her reaction. One commenter wrote, “NTA. I’d be livid if I spent all that time preparing that and my partner just gave it away without asking me first. Perhaps he should try cooking some meals himself so he understands the time and effort and thoughtfulness that go into them.”

Another added, “I’d be furious too — spending hours cooking and having your hard work given away without asking is disrespectful. He should try cooking a full meal himself to appreciate the effort and planning it takes.”
In an update, the woman shared that her husband apologized, saying that from now on he would always ask first. “My husband made a dumb decision and he recognizes that now,” she wrote, “but the amount of assumptions people have come up with is wild!”
