A 20-year-old woman turned to Reddit after a first date took a sudden, uncomfortable turn — leaving her questioning not only what happened, but whether she should repay her date for dinner after walking out halfway through the meal.
In her post, she said she’d been talking with Laura, 21, after meeting on Hinge. They messaged and FaceTimed for weeks, so she felt optimistic heading into their in-person dinner. Everything seemed normal — until she noticed a photo on Laura’s lock screen.
The image showed “a dude kissing her cheek.” Curious but calm, the woman said she asked about it while they were eating. Laura then told her the man was her boyfriend — and added that he knew she was on the date. The admission immediately made the poster feel blindsided.
Things got more tense when Laura explained that she and her boyfriend were “looking for a ‘unicorn,’” a setup the poster said she never agreed to and never would have consented to without full disclosure. “At this point I knew what was up and I told her straight up that ‘I’m not okay with that,’” she wrote, saying Laura appeared genuinely shocked by the pushback.

The woman stressed that her profile clearly stated she was a lesbian and monogamous — not interested in anything open or involving a third partner. Still, she said Laura tried to persuade her, even bringing up that her boyfriend was attractive and that they’d been searching for someone to join them for a while.
Feeling misled and pressured, the poster said she repeatedly shook her head no as Laura attempted to salvage the moment, suggesting they could “keep talking though.” Instead, she told her date that a situation like this should be disclosed upfront, then stood up and left the restaurant.

Later, she acknowledged she probably should have paid her portion before leaving — but said she was too stunned to think clearly. “Because like this whole time he’s been interested in me too without me knowing,” she wrote, adding that the lack of transparency made her feel uneasy and tricked.
Afterward, she asked friends for advice and got mixed reactions. Some thought she should send half the cost through Venmo or Zelle. Others argued that because Laura withheld something major and sprung it on her mid-date, Laura should deal with the consequences — including the bill.
Reddit commenters largely focused on how abruptly the situation had been revealed. One person said paying her share might have been ideal in a calmer moment, but that it was understandable she wasn’t thinking clearly — and added that the couple “deserved to be stuck with the bill” for pushing an arrangement she hadn’t agreed to. Another commenter questioned why Laura only admitted she had a boyfriend after being asked about the lock-screen photo, wondering when she planned to mention it otherwise.
