A California woman who previously spent time in prison for live-streaming a DUI crash that killed her younger sister has died in a drive-by shooting.
Obdulia Sanchez was fatally shot in Stockton, Calif., on Tuesday, Dec. 2, according to authorities, as reported by KCRA, KSEE and ABC 10.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a drive-by shooting and has not announced any arrests. Another person was also injured.
Sanchez had earlier been sentenced to six years in prison on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI and child endangerment in connection with the 2017 crash that killed her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline.
At the time of that crash, Sanchez was 18 years old, driving under the influence and live-streaming on Instagram. She continued streaming even after both sisters were ejected from the vehicle, capturing her sister’s body on video.
In the footage, Sanchez could be heard saying, “I f—— killed my sister, okay. I know I’m going to jail for life, alright? I understand that. This is the last thing I wanted to happen.”
Neither sister was wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed into a fence.
“Why did God choose me to be the older sister?” Sanchez said during her 2018 sentencing hearing. “I can’t even do my job right. I had so much potential, but I threw it all away because I wanted to look cool and drive carelessly.”
She was released on parole in 2019 but was re-arrested later that same year.
Just days before Sanchez’s death, four people — including three children — were killed in a mass shooting at a birthday party in Stockton. No suspect has yet been arrested in that case.
