A New York City police detective made an unexpected stop on his commute this week — and it may have saved a baby’s life.

NYPD Detective First Grade Michael Greaney was driving to work at around 8:45 a.m. when he noticed a black BMW speeding along the Bronx River Parkway, the New York Post reported. Greaney, 40, was in an unmarked vehicle. He pulled over to assess what was happening — and quickly learned why the driver was rushing.

According to the outlet, the driver, a father of an 8-month-old girl, told him urgently: “My baby’s choking.”

In a TikTok video that’s now spreading widely, Greaney is seen reaching into the vehicle, lifting the baby — dressed in a pink onesie — and striking her back repeatedly while holding her at the roadside. Moments later, her airway cleared.

A nurse who happened to be passing by then checked the child to make sure she was okay, according to the report.

“I followed the vehicle, turned my lights on,” Greaney told the Post. “[The dad] rolled down his window and yelled, ‘My baby’s choking!’”

He said he continued patting her back “until something dislodged.” Greaney added that he didn’t see or feel anything come out, but the baby’s cough told him what he needed to know.

“She let out a little cry, which obviously we know that if you’re talking or crying, you’re not choking,” he told the outlet. “So that [was] a good sign.”

Greaney also acknowledged the surge of emotions in a moment like that — especially as a parent himself. “[There are] definitely all sorts of emotion, panic, shock, terrified and everything,” he said, adding that he was relieved the baby would be okay and “happy that she’s gonna be here for Christmas.”

After the father thanked him, Greaney said he encouraged him to learn how to respond in an emergency in the future, suggesting he watch a video on how to perform the Heimlich maneuver.

“I set her back into the car seat, and I took off,” Greaney said. Later, he was surprised to learn the clip had gone viral. “I told a couple people. I didn’t think it was gonna go like this, no way.”

Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro praised Greaney’s composure, telling the Post that the detective’s fast response reflected what “heroism looks like on the streets of this city.”
