Xana Kernodle may have been the key reason Bryan Kohberger was caught in the shocking 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, according to newly unsealed police reports.

Investigators believe Kohberger entered the off-campus home in the early hours of November 13, 2022, allegedly intending to kill Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves on the third floor. But Kernodle’s resistance, police say, may have disrupted his plan—and led to the crucial mistakes that exposed him.

The reports suggest Kohberger likely encountered Kernodle as she returned from picking up a DoorDash delivery. In the chaos that followed, he chased her downstairs, where she fought fiercely for her life. Sgt. Shaine Gunderson wrote that Kernodle had more than 50 stab wounds, most of them defensive. She was the only victim not found in bed, and blood cast-off was found above her body on the walls.

That violent confrontation, according to officials, may have caused Kohberger to accidentally leave behind his KA-BAR knife sheath—key DNA evidence that tied him to the scene. It also made enough noise to alert surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen, who opened her door and briefly saw the masked killer fleeing the home.

Mortensen later gave a description to authorities, placing Kohberger at the crime scene. Her statement, coupled with Kernodle’s apparent resistance and the evidence left behind, played a major role in securing Kohberger’s eventual guilty plea.

Further reports indicate Kohberger may have sustained facial and knuckle injuries during the struggle—wounds his friend later noticed and shared with police.

Kernodle, only 20 years old at the time, is now being remembered not just as a victim but as the person who may have stopped a brutal killer from slipping away unnoticed.
