WASHINGTON — Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem faced a blistering interrogation on Capitol Hill Wednesday as lawmakers shifted focus from agency policy to personal scandals, including allegations that her top adviser fired a Coast Guard pilot over a misplaced blanket.
During a House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) confronted Noem with reports that Corey Lewandowski—a special government employee and Noem’s longtime political confidant—attempted to terminate a veteran pilot mid-journey. The incident reportedly occurred after Noem’s personal blanket was left behind during a transfer between government-leased luxury jets.
“Apparently, when your special blanket, your ‘blankie,’ was left on one of the government jets… your special government employee, Corey Lewandowski, chivalrously stepped forward to fire the pilot mid-air,” Raskin said, citing a Wall Street Journal investigation.
Raskin noted that the commander, a 2003 Coast Guard Academy graduate, had to be “immediately rehired” because no other qualified pilot was available to finish the flight.
Tensions Rise Over ‘Tabloid’ Allegations
The hearing, intended to address DHS leadership and recent controversial shootings in Minneapolis, frequently veered into Noem’s personal life. Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) directly asked Noem if she was engaged in a romantic relationship with Lewandowski.
Noem, whose husband Bryon sat behind her in the hearing room, dismissed the line of questioning as “tabloid garbage” and accused Democrats of attacking “conservative women.” While Noem and Lewandowski have consistently denied having an affair, the Wall Street Journal previously reported that President Donald Trump allegedly blocked Lewandowski from becoming Noem’s chief of staff due to concerns over their relationship.
Accountability and Agency Conduct
The ‘blanket’ anecdote served as a flashpoint for broader criticisms regarding the culture at DHS under Noem. Investigative reports have detailed a high turnover rate and a climate of mistrust, including:
- Mass Leadership Changes: Roughly 80% of career ICE field leadership has been replaced since Noem took office.
- Polygraph Testing: Reports suggest Noem and Lewandowski have required polygraph tests for staff members they suspected of disloyalty.
- Resource Allocation: Noem has faced scrutiny for spending approximately $220 million on media consultants and $200 million on luxury Gulfstream G700 jets while the department faced a funding shutdown.
A Look Ahead
The House hearing followed a more hostile reception for Noem in the Senate, where some Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing her handling of the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota. With GOP Senator Thom Tillis vowing to stall Senate business until his concerns are met, Noem’s path forward at DHS remains fraught with both legislative and personal challenges.
As the House prepares for a final vote on DHS oversight matters this Thursday, the focus remains on whether the “blanket incident” will prompt further internal investigations into the authority wielded by non-career advisers like Lewandowski.
