An Oregon judge sentenced former child actor Zachery Ty Bryan to 19 months in prison on Friday, March 20, marking the latest chapter in a mounting series of legal crises for the Home Improvement alum.
Bryan, 44, appeared virtually in Lane County court from a California correctional facility, where he is currently serving a separate 16-month sentence for a felony DUI conviction. The new 19-month term follows Bryan’s December admission to three probation violations.
A Pattern of Legal Escalation
The sentencing adds to a complex web of interstate legal battles. Once Bryan completes his time in California, authorities will extradite him to Oklahoma. There, he faces a potential five-year prison sentence stemming from an October 2024 DUI arrest—his second such incident that year.
Defense attorney John Kolego expressed “extreme disappointment” with the court’s decision, advocating for rehabilitation over incarceration. Kolego argued that Bryan’s struggles originate from a “traumatic childhood” marked by abuse and exploitation during his years as a child star.
“What he needs is help,” Kolego stated, noting that Bryan is currently held in solitary confinement in California to isolate him from the general population due to his fame.

The Lane County Incident
The probation violations originated from a December 1, 2025, incident near a popular Oregon campsite. According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies discovered Bryan and his fiancée, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, impaired near a crashed pickup truck.
Investigators allege that following a dispute, Cartwright attempted to run Bryan over with the vehicle while their three children were inside. The truck veered into a ditch; no injuries were reported. At the time, Bryan was under a court-ordered no-contact mandate regarding Cartwright following a prior domestic violence case.
Cartwright previously pleaded guilty to DUI and reckless driving charges related to the event, receiving probation and 30 days of incarceration.

A History of Violence and Substance Abuse
Bryan’s legal record has expanded rapidly since 2021:
- 2021: Pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor domestic violence charges.
- 2023: Pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony assault.
- 2024: Convicted of felony DUI in La Quinta, California.
- 2025: Faced new allegations of second-degree domestic violence in South Carolina.
During his virtual appearance, a remorseful Bryan addressed the court, acknowledging a severe alcohol addiction and a desire to reform for his seven children. Despite these pleas, the court opted for a significant prison term, citing the repeated nature of his violations and the risk to public safety.
