A shooter opened fire on an ICE field office in Dallas from a nearby rooftop Wednesday morning, killing one detainee and critically wounding two others, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Earlier reports from the agency had indicated that two detainees were killed and one wounded.
Officials said the suspected shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind ammunition marked with the words “ANTI ICE” in blue writing. FBI Director Kash Patel shared a photo of the ammunition on his X account, noting that it suggested an ideological motive. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the attack.
The gunman, whom the Department of Homeland Security described as a “sniper,” has not been publicly identified. The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building and at a van near the entrance where the victims were struck, the statement said.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux reported that at approximately 6:40 a.m. local time, officers received an assist-the-officer call.
At a news conference later in the day, Joseph Rothrock, head of the FBI field office in Dallas, said the bureau is investigating the shooting as an act of targeted violence.
Authorities have declined to provide details about the victims.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of homeland security, noted that the building had received a “viable” bomb threat about a month ago.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz joined other officials at the news conference, calling for an end to politically motivated violence.
“This needs to stop. Violence is wrong. Politically motivated violence is wrong,” Cruz said. “We should not be putting language out there that inspires madmen to commit evil crimes.”
The facility is primarily used to process detainees after arrest and before they are transferred to a long-term detention center, officials said.
