Trump Enforces Strict West Wing Dress Code, Gifts Cabinet $145 Florsheims to Avoid “S—y Shoes”

In an unusual shift in executive protocol, President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that he has taken an active role in outfitting his Cabinet, gifting administration officials high-end dress shoes to ensure they meet his aesthetic standards for the West Wing.

Speaking during a Friday interview on “The Brian Kilmeade Show,” the president confirmed recent reports that he has been distributing leather oxfords to agency heads, lawmakers, and senior advisers. The move, described by some insiders as a mix of presidential patronage and image management, centers on a rejection of modern “business casual” trends in favor of traditional formality.

“No Sneakers Allowed”: The New West Wing Dress Code

During the interview, Trump was direct about his distaste for casual footwear in the halls of power. “I never like Cabinet members walking in in sneakers,” he told Kilmeade. “Sneakers are wonderful, but I don’t want my Cabinet members wearing sneakers.”

The president framed the gifts as a practical solution to what he perceives as a lack of quality footwear among his top staff.

  • The Brand of Choice: Trump has reportedly “fallen in love” with Florsheim, a 134-year-old American brand.
  • The Cost: The leather oxfords typically retail for $145.
  • The Justification: Trump cited his own past experiences with uncomfortable footwear, stating, “I have fun with it… When they tell me they have a problem, I say, ‘Let me get you a pair of shoes.’”

The “Shoe Inspection” Ritual

The Wall Street Journal first detailed the president’s habit earlier this week, describing scenes where meetings behind the Resolute Desk abruptly pivot to footwear critiques. In one December meeting, Vice President JD Vance recalled Trump peering over the desk at his and Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s feet, bluntly telling them, “You guys have s—y shoes.”

According to Vance, the president then produced a catalog and began guessing their sizes—a “parlor trick” the president has reportedly perfected.

The list of officials now sporting the presidential gift includes:

  • JD Vance, Vice President
  • Marco Rubio, Secretary of State
  • Pete Hegseth, Defense Secretary
  • Howard Lutnick, Commerce Secretary
  • Sean Duffy, Transportation Secretary
  • Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, Media Personalities

Viral Scrutiny and “Oversized” Diplomacy

The president’s hands-on approach to outfitting his staff has not been without its critics—or its comedic moments. Photographs of Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently went viral after observers noticed a significant gap between his heel and the back of his dress shoe, leading to speculation that the president’s “guessing” of shoe sizes may be less than scientific.

One anonymous White House official told the Journal that the atmosphere has become “hysterical” because “everybody’s afraid not to wear them” around the president, regardless of the fit or personal preference.

“Now they look all spiffy and nice. It’s a gift from Donald Trump.” — President Donald Trump

A Conflict of Comfort and Commerce

While Trump promotes the brand as a symbol of American professionalism, the partnership is purely aesthetic rather than political. Weyco Group, the Wisconsin-based parent company of Florsheim, has previously challenged the Trump administration’s trade policies in the U.S. Court of International Trade. The company argued that tariffs on Chinese imports—where many of their shoes are manufactured—adversely affected their business.

The move also creates a notable contrast with the president’s own commercial ventures. In 2024, the president launched “Trump Sneakers” at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia, featuring gold high-tops priced at $399. Despite selling his own brand of athletic footwear, the president appears determined to keep his Cabinet in leather oxfords.
