An 11-year-old girl is recovering after being attacked by a mountain lion in Malibu, California.
Around 5:42 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on the 32500 block of Pacific Coast Highway after reports of an animal attack.
Deputies found the girl in the backyard with a bite wound on her arm. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews treated her at the scene before her parents took her to the hospital. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and she is expected to make a full recovery, according to KTLA.
Officials said the girl had been feeding chickens outside just before the attack. Deputies located the mountain lion nearby and kept it contained until the California Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived.
The animal was later shot and killed. DNA tests confirmed it was the same mountain lion that attacked the girl.
This is not the first such incident in the area. Nearly a year ago, a 5-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion while picnicking with his family at Malibu Creek State Park. He survived but suffered serious injuries. In that case, the mountain lion was also euthanized because it was considered a danger to the public.
