A tragic accident in Burlingame has left a 4-year-old boy dead and a 6-year-old girl injured after a chain-reaction crash involving an electric bike and a car.

According to the Burlingame Police Department, the incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 8, in the 1200 block of Donnelly Avenue. Officers arrived to find two children who had been hit by a car while standing on the sidewalk in front of a restaurant.

Police say the crash began when a car was pulling out of a driveway and was struck by an e-bike traveling east on Donnelly Avenue. The impact caused the car to speed forward across the street, jump the curb, and crash into the Truffle Poke Bar Restaurant.

The car hit two children on the sidewalk. Four-year-old Ayden Fang suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His family had been meeting friends at the restaurant at the time. Loved ones say Ayden enjoyed reading and had a special fondness for turtles.

A GoFundMe campaign for Ayden’s family has raised more than $20,000.

The 6-year-old girl who was also struck was taken to Stanford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She remains hospitalized.

Police said the driver, a 19-year-old woman from San Mateo, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities believe neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash.

A small memorial for Ayden has been placed outside the crash site.

“This is the third pedestrian to die in Burlingame in the past year,” pedestrian safety advocate Mike Swire told KGO, calling on city leaders to improve safety for people walking in the area.

Lieutenant David Perna of the Burlingame Police Department called the crash one of the most tragic incidents the city’s downtown has seen in years.

The investigation is still ongoing.
