Bryan Kohberger, despite being the most high-profile inmate at the Latah County Jail, managed to maintain a relatively low profile while awaiting trial for the murder of four University of Idaho students.

Details of his behavior behind bars were outlined in a report by Cpl. Brett Payne of the Moscow Police Department, based on an interview with a fellow inmate who once shared a cell with Kohberger.

According to that inmate, Kohberger displayed several “annoying” habits but never showed hostility—aside from one incident that triggered a rare display of aggression.

Described as “highly intelligent and polite,” Kohberger reportedly never mentioned the killings he would later confess to in court. However, he frequently asked others about the crimes that led to their own incarceration.

The inmate also recalled Kohberger’s intense hygiene routines, noting he would spend between “45 minutes to an hour in the shower” and repeatedly wash his hands “dozens of times” each day.

Kohberger was often awake through the night and stayed in constant motion around the cell, seemingly spending as much time showering as he did sleeping.

The only time the inmate witnessed any anger was during a phone call Kohberger had with his mother. While on the call, another inmate watching a sporting event shouted “you suck” at the television, which Kohberger misinterpreted as a personal insult aimed at him and his mother. He reacted by “aggressively” confronting the man.

According to the report, the misunderstanding was resolved quickly after a brief conversation.

Kohberger is now under the supervision of the Idaho Department of Corrections as he awaits final placement within the state prison system.
