A Florida man who said his girlfriend died in a strange accident has been found guilty of murder.

Adam Crespo, 49, was convicted Monday of second-degree murder by a Broward County jury. The jury took less than two hours to decide. He could spend the rest of his life in prison.

The case is about the death of Crespo’s girlfriend, 32-year-old Silvia Galva. She died in July 2019 in the couple’s bedroom in Hallandale Beach, about 15 miles north of Miami. She was killed after being impaled on a bedpost.

Crespo did not testify in court. He still claims her death was an accident. His sentencing is set for October 31.

According to police records, Galva spent the day before her death with a female friend. Around midnight, they met up with Crespo. The three went to a hotel bar in Hollywood, then returned to Crespo’s home after 1 a.m.

Galva’s friend told police she heard Crespo and Galva arguing in the bedroom soon after arriving. She didn’t know why they were fighting but remembered Crespo asking Galva to leave the room.

A short time later, the friend heard Galva scream and say something about making a scene. Moments after that, Crespo shouted for her to call 911.

When the friend ran into the room, she saw Galva lying on her back with a chest wound. She tried CPR, but Galva had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.

Crespo told police that Galva was drunk and refused to leave the room. He said he pulled her by the ankles to get her off the bed. She held onto a five-foot bedpost shaped like a spear with a metal blade. He claimed that while pulling her, he looked away and then heard a snap. When he looked back, Galva was impaled.

Prosecutors argued that the wound’s angle and depth proved Crespo pushed the blade into her on purpose. An expert witness supported this theory.

Assistant State Attorney Jaclyn Broudy told the jury, “He was angry and wanted her out.”

The jury agreed, and Crespo is now in jail waiting for sentencing.
