A baby girl is lucky to be alive after a serious car crash in Thailand.

Video obtained by the Associated Press shows rescuers rushing to save the girl, who is thought to be about 1 year old. The truck she was in fell nearly 50 feet into a ravine in Chiang Mai Province on Saturday, Aug. 9, according to local media outlet Bangkok Post.

Rescue teams arrived around 9 p.m. and found the truck upside down, with its roof smashed against a rock. The passengers were a family: a mother, father, and their young daughter. The mother died at the scene, while the father, who was still conscious, told rescuers that his daughter was trapped inside the truck.

The rescue was very difficult. It was dark, the truck was above a small stream, and the space to reach the child was very narrow. Rescuers worked carefully to reach the baby, with one rescuer even sticking his head under the truck to calm her. Finally, they were able to pull the crying girl out through a window, and cheers broke out among the team.

The child had been sitting in her car seat, wrapped in a blanket and surrounded by pillows her mother had arranged. The AP reported that the blankets and pillows acted like “makeshift airbags,” cushioning her from the fall. Rescue workers were moved by the mother’s last act of love.

It is not clear if the baby was hurt or needed medical treatment. Details about the father’s condition after the crash were also not available.
