Jessa Duggar is opening up about the special way her mom, Michelle Duggar, supports her after giving birth.
After having her sixth baby, son Edward Owen, earlier this month, Jessa shared that her mom was not only with her during labor but also stays with the family afterward.
In the second part of her birth vlog, Jessa said, “My mom is absolutely wonderful. She was there with me every step of the way, helping, supporting, and coaching me.”
She added, “My mom is such a treasure. She stays with us after we have a baby and will care for the baby all night if we need her to. She’ll do anything—sit up with the baby, help however she can.”
Jessa explained that the first 24 hours after birth can be very hard. Michelle always checks on the baby to make sure he’s okay, which helps Jessa rest.
She said, “It’s super helpful. My mom is always there, saying, ‘I will take care of the baby. If you want to sleep, get some sleep and I’ll look after him.’ She’s there for those little sounds and noises so I can relax and actually get some sleep.”
Jessa and her husband Ben Seewald have six children: Spurgeon, 9; Henry, 8; Ivy, 6; Fern, 3; and their newest baby, Edward. They also experienced a pregnancy loss in 2020.
In the same video, Jessa shared that her 16-year-old sister, Jordyn-Grace, played a special role in Edward’s birth. She cut the baby’s umbilical cord.
Jessa explained, “I told Ben, ‘You’ve never cut the cord. You should cut it this time,’ mostly teasing him because he has a weak stomach for that stuff. He’s been a huge support through labor but doesn’t want to be near that part.”
She continued, “This was Jordyn’s first time at one of my births, so I said, ‘Jordyn, you should cut the cord.’ She was really excited and said, ‘Wow, this is awesome. This is so cool.’ It was a sweet moment.”
After Edward was born, Jessa’s dad, Jim Bob Duggar, made a rare appearance in the vlog, holding his 39th grandchild.
“Number 39,” Jim Bob said. “A keeper! How much did he weigh?”
Jessa answered that Edward weighed 10 pounds even. Jim Bob joked, “I guessed 9 pounds, 15 ounces.”
