A teenager in New Mexico has been arrested for murder after he reportedly called an Uber with the plan to kill the driver to relieve his stress.
The driver, Joseph Andrus, was killed on Thursday, Aug. 7, after driving 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez. Sanchez allegedly shot Andrus multiple times, according to court documents and police statements reported by KOB, the Albuquerque Journal, and KOAT.
During a police interview, Sanchez reportedly admitted to killing Andrus. He allegedly told police he needed to “let off some steam,” according to KOB, the Albuquerque Journal, and KRQE.
Authorities say Sanchez had his girlfriend order him an Uber. He went through several drivers before picking Andrus, saying he chose him because he “seemed like a good guy,” according to the Albuquerque Journal. Sanchez reportedly added that he doesn’t “really go for good people.”

He allegedly had a friendly conversation with Andrus, describing him as a “really cool guy,” before telling him to get out of the car and shooting him multiple times. Sanchez then reportedly drove away in Andrus’ car, which police later found outside his girlfriend’s house.
Friends and family remember Andrus as kind, brave, and hardworking. He graduated from college in July, which his mother said had been a goal for years. His mother shared that he was especially close to his little sister, helping her stay calm before surgeries.
His partner, Oli Rogers, shared that Andrus’ family wants people to honor his memory by doing one kind act for a stranger every day.
Sanchez has been charged with murder, armed robbery, and tampering with evidence. He appeared in court on Saturday, Aug. 9. Prosecutors have asked that he remain in jail while awaiting trial, and a judge will decide on that motion soon.
