A woman admits she’s considering giving her baby the same name as her cousin’s child — mainly because she’s “running out of options.”
Posting on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the anonymous mom-to-be explained:
“I’m about to have my third boy (so running out of name options we like at this point). My husband recently heard this name Koda (fake name) and has fallen in love with it.”
She noted that she also likes the name, but there’s a catch: her cousin already has a son named Koda, who is now about 12 years old.
Still, she pointed out that her cousin and his family live in another country, and they only see them “maybe once every five years.” With her father being one of nine siblings, she added, name overlap in their large family has happened before.
Yet, she admitted she feels a little hesitant since the name isn’t very common.
“I only know of two and one of those are my cousin’s son,” she wrote.
Her husband isn’t concerned, but she decided to seek outside opinions before bringing it up with relatives.
“If it matters, my cousin is about 10 years older than me — so we aren’t close but are friendly (I am closer with one of his younger siblings though),” she explained.
Interestingly, she also pointed out that her cousin was named after his father, making him a junior — further proof that names have been reused in their family before.

Most Reddit commenters seemed to think reusing the name wouldn’t be a problem.
“There’s almost no such thing as a truly original name for a child,” one user wrote. “It’s pretty much guaranteed that someone will have had the name before. If it’s a distant cousin of yours, and the child will have a different full name than the one you already know, then yeah, I guess it’s fine.”
Another added: “It’s literally just a name and other people have it too regardless of how popular it is… do what you want!”
