WASHINGTONJohn Kiriakou, the former CIA officer who gained notoriety for exposing the agency’s torture program, issued dire warnings in late February that the United States and Iran were on the precipice of a full-scale global conflict. Speaking on multiple platforms including the Julian Dorey podcast, Kiriakou asserted that aggressive military posturing and a breakdown in diplomatic channels had moved the region closer to catastrophic conflict.

The warning proved prescient. As of early March 2026, the Middle East is reeling from unprecedented military operations that have fundamentally altered the regional order.

The Intelligence Warning

In a widely circulated February podcast appearance, Kiriakou revealed that intelligence sources suggested a decision had been made to strike Iran, despite public diplomatic overtures. The former counterterrorism officer claimed that the Trump administration’s shift toward regime change rhetoric had eliminated diplomatic off-ramps.

Speaking on the Julian Dorey podcast, Kiriakou stated that a fellow former CIA officer who had been at the White House revealed plans for military action. He noted that while President Trump publicly offered Iran a 10-day window to accept comprehensive proposals, such timelines were often tactical distractions.

Kiriakou also detailed internal political divisions, identifying Vice President JD Vance and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard as opposing military strikes, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff supported action.

The former CIA officer, who gained prominence after blowing the whistle on CIA torture and serving prison time, warned that any Iranian strike sinking a U.S. aircraft carrier could spark World War III.

The February 28 Strikes

Kiriakou’s warnings materialized on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, a massive joint aerial campaign targeting Iranian infrastructure and leadership. The strikes, which Israel codenamed “Roaring Lion,” resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The operation, preceded by the largest U.S. military buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, targeted key officials, military commanders, and facilities across Iran. President Trump released an eight-minute video statement at 2:30 AM EST on February 28, declaring the purpose of the strikes was effectively regime change.

Strategic Consequences

The death of Khamenei has created a power vacuum in Tehran. Iran declared 40 days of mourning and launched retaliatory strikes against U.S. military bases, Israeli targets, and facilities across the region. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called the killing “a declaration of open war on Muslims, especially Shiites, in all corners of the world.”

Iranian retaliatory attacks have damaged air hubs, rocked densely populated areas, and disrupted oil shipments throughout the region. The conflict has already claimed American lives, with U.S. Central Command reporting casualties among U.S. forces from Iranian counterstrikes.

Looking Ahead

As of March 1, 2026, the world faces an unprecedented crisis in the Middle East. Kiriakou’s warnings about the potential for broader conflict appear increasingly prescient as regional tensions escalate and the window for diplomatic resolution appears to have closed.

The former intelligence officer, who previously appeared on platforms including The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett and authored books on U.S.-Iran relations, has consistently advocated for diplomatic engagement over military escalation.

As Iran observes its declared period of mourning and the international community grapples with the implications of these strikes, the question remains whether the cycle of retaliation can be broken before Kiriakou’s darkest predictions of a broader regional or global conflict become reality.
