Barron is set to return for his second year at New York University’s Stern School of Business after Labor Day weekend

Barron Trump is dedicating his energy to building a career while continuing his education. The son of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump spent much of his summer working on future business plans, a social source tells PEOPLE.

Away from New York University’s Stern School of Business — where he is expected to begin his sophomore year on Sept. 3 — Barron reportedly engaged in meetings with business partners, developed tech projects, and mapped out deals to launch his own enterprise.

“Barron has been actively working on his own financial interests and has spent time with others who he is involved with in that area,” the source said of his summer activities.

“Still, he has spent a great deal of time with his family,” the source added, noting that he has not appeared publicly with his parents or half-siblings since his father’s Jan. 20 inauguration.

In May, dating rumors surfaced after an anonymous “friend” on the NYU campus told NewsNation that the first son “has a really nice girlfriend and hangs out with her a lot,” though no further details were provided, and PEOPLE has not been able to confirm the claim.

The last public comment from the Trump family about Barron’s romantic life came one month into his freshman year, when Donald Trump told podcast host Patrick Bet-David, “I don’t think he’s had a girlfriend yet.”

Nearly a year later, PEOPLE’s source says they still haven’t heard about Barron being involved with anyone seriously — adding that, for now, “I don’t think that’s a big deal in his life right now.”

“He has more school, a family who dotes on him and a career of his own he is launching,” the source explained.

PEOPLE reached out to the first lady’s office, which handles questions about the first family, for comment on the latest reporting.

Barron’s business pursuits first made headlines in January, shortly after his father’s return to office, when Newsweek reported he was considering starting a real estate company.

At the time, a political source close to the Trump family told PEOPLE that Barron — who “wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps” — didn’t have a fully formed business yet but was laying the foundation for one.

“He is interested in business in general, developing properties, making money and being involved in successful projects,” the source said. “He has his own ideas and understands what people of his age are looking for. He is quite entrepreneurial, bright and not shy about getting his own career in gear.”

In 2024, Barron and two partners incorporated a real estate company, Trump, Fulcher & Roxburgh Capital Inc., in Wyoming on July 15, 2024. It was dissolved in November, days after Donald Trump’s election win.

One of the partners later explained that the dissolution aimed to avoid unwanted media attention during the presidential transition, with hopes of relaunching the business in the spring.

By January 2025, another source told PEOPLE that Barron’s venture would always “sell access” to the Trump family and the White House, regardless of the company’s focus or branding.
