A woman turned to Reddit for advice after a heated family dispute involving her aunt’s dog. Using an anonymous account, she explained how she unexpectedly became the dog’s owner — and why she refuses to give him back.

“My Aunt (K for short) has used me as a free dogsitter for years for her small dog,” she wrote. She claimed the animal had been “neglected” for years, receiving little food, no toys, and no regular vet visits.

Things came to a breaking point in August 2024. “She lost her temporary housing and I was forced to drive 2 hours in the middle of the night to pick up the dog before she dumped him at the pound,” she said.

Faced with the possibility of the dog being abandoned, she laid down her conditions. “I told her that if I was to pick him up, she would not get him back and I would claim ownership. She agreed over text,” she explained.

Since then, the dog — a chihuahua mix named Vik — has been thriving. “Vik is a happy, healthy old chihuahua mix, with toys and a warm bed and a little brother and vet care,” she shared.

But family tensions soon resurfaced. The woman said her aunt still has no stable housing and is currently in a legal battle with her mother over guardianship of her grandmother, who has dementia. While she has stayed out of that conflict, she says she continues to care for both her grandmother and her rescue dogs.

Recently, however, her aunt began demanding Vik’s return. “K has begun to harass me over text, demanding that I give back Vik or she will call the police because I stole her dog,” she wrote.

The woman noted that she took legal steps to secure ownership. “Because Vik didn’t previously have a microchip, I essentially claimed him as a stray and registered him with my local shire,” she explained. She added that her aunt never officially owned the dog since there was no registration in her name.

Still, the threats have caused her stress. “Regardless, I am scared she may try to take him by force of some kind, and I do not know whether she has a legal right to Vik,” she admitted.

Attempts at compromise have failed. “She will not listen to my attempts at negotiation for visitation, and is telling me how I am stealing my cousin’s dog and my cousin is devastated,” she added.

The woman said her decision is based on protecting Vik. “I don’t want to put him back in that awful place. I am keeping him,” she wrote firmly. She ended her post by asking Reddit: “AITAH?”

Readers on Reddit overwhelmingly supported her, with one commenter telling her: “NTA. Send her a cease & desist letter. She’ll back off. If not, file a harassment claim with the police.”

Others encouraged her to keep records of all messages from her aunt. “DO NOT BLOCK HER. You’ll need these texts and calls as evidence,” another advised.

Although she says she normally avoids family drama, the woman insists her priority is Vik’s safety — even if it means facing family backlash.
