Fifteen people were killed and 16 others injured — including five children — after a bus crashed and plunged about 1,000 feet down a cliff in Sri Lanka, officials said.

The accident happened on Thursday night, Sept. 4, according to a Sri Lankan police spokesperson who spoke with the Associated Press.

Investigators believe the driver was speeding when the bus hit another vehicle and guardrails before careening off the road. None of the victims have been identified yet.

The crash took place near Wellawaya, a town less than 200 miles east of the capital city, Colombo, Sky News reported.

Local media said the passengers were a group of domestic tourists traveling home from vacation, according to Agence France-Presse.

Video from the AP shows emergency teams rushing to the scene as victims were carried away on stretchers. Nearby travelers, including healthcare workers, also helped first responders with rescue efforts, the Daily Mirror reported.

Sri Lanka has a high number of fatal bus crashes, often caused by reckless driving, steep terrain, and poorly maintained roads, according to the AP.

In May, more than 20 people died near the village of Kotmale after a bus slid off a cliff and into a ravine.
