Two Marquette University students were killed, and four others were injured in a car crash. The driver has been arrested.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, CBS 58, and FOX 6 Now, lacrosse players Scott Michaud, 19, and Noah Snyder, 20, died in the crash on Friday, Sept. 5, around 5 p.m., near their campus in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the students’ identities on Saturday morning, according to the Journal Sentinel.
The outlets reported that four other people were injured in the two-car crash at the intersection of North 27th Street and West St. Paul Avenue. Some injured students were treated at the scene, while others were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said a 41-year-old driver has been taken into custody.
No charges have been filed yet, as the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is still reviewing the case, the Journal Sentinel reported.
Michaud and Snyder were both members of the men’s lacrosse team, the university said on Facebook. Three of the four injured students were also lacrosse players, Marquette said in a statement.
According to the Marquette lacrosse roster, Michaud, a goalie, was from Springboro, Ohio, and went to high school near Dayton. Snyder was from Irving, N.Y., and attended high school in West Chester, Pa. The athletics department said he was a “valuable offensive contributor” who played attack.
Both students were three-star recruits. University president Kimo Ah Yun wrote in a letter that they had both been named BIG EAST All-Academic Team athletes for their work as students.
The Journal Sentinel reported that at least 39 people have died in Milwaukee car crashes this year, which is about 25% fewer than last year. The city has recently seen illegal street takeovers, reckless driving, and speeding, according to the outlet.
On social media, Marquette announced that all athletic events for the weekend would be canceled. A special mass for the school community was held on Saturday afternoon. The campus’ Alumni Memorial Union was open from noon to 3 p.m. for support.
“Please keep Noah and Scott’s parents, siblings and families, and the Marquette Athletics and college communities in your prayers,” Ah Yun wrote.
“Noah and Scott’s lives were taken too soon, and we share in the heartbreak of their teammates, coaches and those who knew them personally,” he added.
